Harare- THE expansion of Mbudzi People’s Market is set to boost employment creation through the construction of an additional 500 stalls rendering it arguably the biggest informal market in Harare,Express Mail Zim can report.
The development is in line with the National Development Strategy 1 and the initiative is a joint venture between Harare City and Alpha Holdings owned by property mogul Ken Sharpe.
At present, the gigantic marketplace boasts of 358 tenants and with an extra 12 hectares of land at their disposal, they are poised to make immense contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product .
This is against the background that the informal sector is a key pillar in economic development.
In an interview with Express Mail Zim, the complex general manager Felix Ormachea said 500 more shops will be added for the convenience of citizens soon after the completion of the road interchange .
The road construction has not affected the project and this was revealed in a recent media tour with the Transport ministry Permanent Secretary and his principal Felix Mhona.
“We have an extra 12 ha to expand and will add another 500 shops and structure our development in line with the road interchange design,” said Ormachea.
The market has become a one stop shop where the public is exposed to a plethora of services including hardware, boutiques, dental surgery , hair salons among others.
Given that the road is a passage to Masvingo province and neighbouring South Africa, there is a hive of activity that has seen agro-feed companies like Novafeeds cashing in and making the ease of doing business to famers.
The company ‘s retail manager Tatenda Mabuto gave testimony to that milestone development .
An online shopping store has also been set up giving Diasporans access to buy products for their loved ones digitally with deliveries guaranteed.
