ZRP Takes Firm Action against supplier in shocking underage drinking incident
Harare:In a recent update, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has taken significant action following the circulation of a disturbing social media video depicting minors engaging in alcohol consumption within the Harare Central Business District.
The ZRP’s initial press statement on 27th December 2023 addressed the viral videos, prompting immediate investigation.
Today, the ZRP confirms the arrest of Phaeteon Mutiyaya (23) on charges of supplying liquor to the underage individuals involved.
Operating a shebeen at Block 2C10, Nenyere Flats, Mbare, Harare, Mutiyaya’s apprehension resulted in the seizure of a substantial quantity of alcoholic beverages.
The recovered items include 16 x 1.25 litres of Super Chibuku, 38 x 200ml bottles of Two Keys Whisky, 25 x 200ml bottles of Gin, 20 empty beer crates, 5 x 500ml bottles of Detroit beer, 5 x 5000ml bottles of Skippers cane spirit, 3 x 750ml bottles of Heinken beer, 2 x 750ml bottles of Gondons Gin, 2 x 750ml bottles of Robertson wine, 1 x 750ml bottle each of Chando wine, Omega whisky, Double Black whisky, Discovery Vodka, Pushkin Vodka, and Black Label quart.
Simultaneously, the police have identified nine other minors, aged between 5 and 11, who were in the company of the initial two minors from Epworth, Harare.
All these minors reside at Nenyere Flats, Mbare, and their parents or guardians have been located by law enforcement.
Further investigations have revealed that the minors utilised money received as Christmas presents to purchase the alcohol.
The group traveled from Mbare to the Harare Central Business District, where they met with the two minors from Epworth, initiating the concerning incident captured on social media.
The ZRP emphasizes its commitment to addressing such incidents promptly, urging community cooperation to prevent the exposure of minors to harmful activities.
Mutiyaya is expected to face legal action, highlighting the serious stance against the supply of alcohol to underage individuals. The ZRP encourages citizens to report any such activities to ensure the safety and well-being of the nation’s youth.
