Zim safe as Cylone Freddy loses energy
Harare- THE Metereological Services Department (MSD) has allayed fears of Cyclone Freddy citing that the phenomenon has been downgraded to a low pressure zone due to its prolonged stay in neighbouring Mozambique.
According to the MSD, the tropical storm Freddy lost energy and is now a mere tropical depression.
The low-pressure zone will have less effect on Zimbabwe with areas most likely to be affected being Manicaland, Mashonaland East, the southern parts of Midlands and Matabeleland South which will experience cloudy conditions and localised rains while the rest of the country will experience sunny weather.
“When it made its landfall it lost a lot of energy and it continues to lose energy due to its prolonged stay in Mozambique. It has not progressed further westwards in Zimbabwe so it is not affecting Zimbabwe that much.
“In the morning we had Chipinge and Chimanimani experiencing cloudy conditions and light rains. Tomorrow we are anticipating cloudy conditions as well over Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Matabeleland South,” said the Meteorological Services Department’s deputy director of public weather services,Linia Gopo.
Cyclone Freddy made its landfall in Madagascar on Tuesday and affected the country’s east coast, with heavy rains and strong winds tearing rooftops resulting in the death of four people and more than 16 thousand people being affected according to Madagascar national risk management office.
