Trial kicks off as woes mount for alleged Harare couple embroiled in Dr Gono USD 100 million property scandal
The couple has previously claimed persecution from political bigwigs
Harare- THE trial for embattled Harare couple Clarks and Beverly Aisha Makoni kicked off Wednesday where they are facing accusations of fraudulently transferring former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Dr Gideon Gono’s property into their names, Express Mail Zim can report.
The couple who have previously claimed persecution from political bigwigs, deny the charges claiming that there is no nexus linking them to the alleged crime.
The couple has been cleared of twelve other related charges but haunted by this latest one.
During cross examination by their legal counsel Admire Rubaya on Wednesday, Gono’s Special Projects Executive George Mashonganyika (representing Galwex Investments)was at pains to produce proof of forgery related to CR14 form, which can be submitted as proof of change in directorship.
State claims that the Makonis changed directorship of Valley Lodge behind Gono’s back and made withdrawals totalling over 130 million Zimbabwean dollars and made good their alleged fraud through manufacturing of fake documents.
It is further alleged that the couple took salaries when in fact the arrangement was that their income was commission based.
The court heard testimony about numerous unauthorized withdrawals betweenx January 2022 and September 2023, leading to substantial financial prejudice to Gono and his company.
The trial was adjourned to this Friday.
