Tee Off- Chapman Golf club loses USD20k from intruders, money ‘dissapears’ from main safe
inside job suspected as HR manager claims to have got 'sloshed'and could not drive home
Harare- AT least USD20 000 ‘dissapeared’ from a Chapman Golf Club main safe a fortinight ago and office bearers remained tight lipped to avoid unrest from elite members who make hefty monthly contributions in respect of membership fees, Express Mail Zim can reveal.
Investigations by Express Mail Zim established that two Sundays ago, the safe was tampered with and security personell realised that almost USD20 000 was missing.
“On Monday, it was discovered that the safe was tampered with and USD20k was lost but management asked employees to keep it hush so that members wont be alarmed,” said our source.
Our investigations established that at least eight employees including human resources manager Edmore Mushavi were taken in for questioning at Highlands police station.
Intrestingly, there was no break in and the CCTV is malfunctional at such an elite golf club.
Another intriguing phenomenon is that the HR boss Mushayi slept over at the club on the night in question citing that he was ‘too drunk” to drive home.
According to their official website , Chapman is an 18 hole, 6582 metre course and is intricately incorporated into a parkland setting with its undulating manicured terrain, entwined by the clever use of a major tributary of the Mukuvisi River.
Efforts to get in touch with any of the office bearers at the elite golf club hit a snag as some of the numbers went unanswered while some were dropped upon introduction.
The authorities at Chapman Golf Club have not released any official statements regarding the incident, but it is clear that there are concerns about the security measures in place at the club.
The fact that there was no break-in and the CCTV cameras were not functioning raises questions about how someone could have accessed the safe without being detected.
The involvement of the HR manager in the incident also adds a layer of suspicion to the case.
His decision to stay overnight at the club on the night of the theft due to being “too drunk” to drive home raises eyebrows and further complicates the situation.
Members of Chapman Golf Club, who are known for their contributions to the club, may be concerned about the safety of their funds and the overall security of the club.
It remains to be seen how the authorities will handle the investigation and what measures will be taken.
No arrests were yet to be made at the time of writing and police spokesperson Paul Nyati was unreachable.
