Semi illiterate: Education perm sec Mhike says Zim learners reach Grade 2 without ability to read and write
Harare- Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education secretary Moses Mhike pulled a shocker and left the goverment egg-faced after acknowledging that the overall pass rate of the Grade 7 results was depressed due to his perception that many learners reach Grade 2 without the ability to read and write,Express Mail Zim can report.
Mhike, who has no iota of experience in the education sector after having been reassigned from the Ministry of Women Affairs claims to have conducted a survey that established his assertion.
“According to a survey we
conducted, the majority of learners cannot read and write at Grade 2. They cannot comprehend simple and straightforward issues,” Mhike stated.
“As a ministry, this is where we need to concentrate to ensure that learners are adequately prepared for Grade 7 examinations,” he was qouted as saying.
Mhike is a human capital development and management specialist who holds undergraduate and post graduate qualifications in public adminstration and management.
He was deputy manager at the Public Service Commisio responsinle for designing the structures of government ministries.
His appointment as the most powerful civil servant in the education ministry os shrudded in mystery.
