Harare- FOOTBALL fans have come out guns blazing against the Harare City Council’s seemingly unpatriotic move to frustrate Sakunda Holdings to refurbish Rufaro Stadium.

The stadium is regarded the ceremonial home of football in Zimbabwe is in a sorry and dilapidated state after it has been neglected by the authorities.

Fans who spoke to Mdlalo90 said the City Fathers should stop politicking at the expense of the beautiful game.

“I think sometimes we should stop politicking when it comes to sport, the move by City of Harare is not acceptable at all,” said Lorraine Mlambo, a staunch Dynamos fan.`

Friends of the Warriors Secretary General Muwashu echoed the same sentiments with Mlambo.

“As Friends of the Warriors, we are so disappointed by this kind of development, Rufaro Stadium is the ceremonial home of football but as it stands we cannot host any match there, I hope City of Harare has better plans with our stadium,” Muwashu told this publication

Leeroy Ncube a Mbare resident said that the refurbishiment of Rufaro will improve economic activities in the suburb because of huge traffic of fans who throng the stadium.

“When Dynamos is playing at home (Rufaro) our small economic activities improve here also. “Rufaro stadium is central to all fans ,” Ncube said

As it stands, Rufaro Stadium is not allowed by CAF and FIFA regulations to host a PSL Match as it does not meet set standards.

Sakunda had promised to turn it into a state of the art stadium and a team of technicians had already been dispatched to South Africa to exchange notes.

Interestingly, the artistic impression video had been availed to Harare authorities before this dramatic somersault.

Besides sport, the iconic stadium would create another revenue streams for Harare through music shows.
Before it’s neglect it has hosted international stars like Buju Banton , Shabba Ranks, Tracey Chapman and the historic Bob Marley who graced the country’s independence celebrations.
