OK Zimbabwe sued USD10k over harrasment of customer
The company's reputation has taken a hit in recent years through these documented cases of negligence and ill treatment of customers.
Harare- LEADING retail chain OK Zimbabwe has been sued USD10 000 for damages arising from an overzealous security who falsely accused a city woman of theft and subsequently unlawfully detaining her.
Express Mail Zim gleaned the summons wherein OK was given a seven days ultimatum to answer to the claim.
The plaintiff is Decision Tevera.
OK Zimbabwe and Loss Control Officer Wellington Makasi were cited as defendants.
Circumstances are that Tevera was dropped by OK branch in the capital and security personell harrased her on false accusations of theft but later discovered that it was mistaken identity.
In an audio recording that leaked to Express Mail Zim, a woman presumably Tevera’s relative narrated the nasty ordeal to a colleague.
“What happened is Decision (Tevera) had just returned from South Africa and her sister dropped her by OK for some some shopping.
“She was forcefully dragged and thrown at the back of a Nissan vehicle in handcuffs and was unlawfully detained and interrogated ,” said the individual.
Tevera is being represented by prominent lawyer Tinashe Tanyanyiwa who is a strong advocate for women rights.
Through their insurer Old Mutual Insurance,OK initially offered to pay a paltry USD500 as stated in a letter authored by company adminstrator Lucky Takawira.
This ‘mockery’ compelled Tevera to seek legal recourse and instructed Tanyanyiwa and Associates.
Last year the High Court ordered OK to pay USD51 000 as compensation to a family whose child’s legs were injured after a grocery shelf in one of its Harare supermarkets collapsed on her in 2015.
