Human rights defender Abigale Mupambi has called on Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa to clarify his motives in defending Innscor. Her remarks come after Mutsvangwa dismissed allegations made by activist Rutendo Matinyarire, who accused Innscor of producing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and cancer-causing substances.
Mutsvangwa refuted Matinyarire’s claims, citing that South African judges had made the correct ruling on the matter. “The wisdom of the South African judges should not be taken lightly,” Mutsvangwa stated, further arguing that the activist lacked the credibility and authority to speak on such issues.
In an interview with this publication, Mupambi urged Mutsvangwa to be transparent about his potential personal interests in Innscor.
“It is crucial to establish how many shares Mutsvangwa holds in Innscor before diving into the wrong debate. The core issue is between the supplier, Innscor, and the consumers—Zimbabweans,” she said. “The level of emotion Mutsvangwa displayed when discussing this matter suggests a conflict of interest, which must be addressed,” Mupambi added.
Mupambi, who has now allied with Matinyarire in challenging Innscor over the GMO allegations, recently petitioned the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ). In response, the CCZ committed to investigating the allegations against Innscor and emphasized the importance of transparency in consumer dealings, as outlined in Section 68 of the Consumer Rights Act of 2015. The Act mandates that contract terms must be clear, comprehensible, and legible, ensuring fairness and good faith in consumer transactions.
