Monkeypox:Govt sets up surveillance measures to guard against potential outbreak
Harare- GOVERNMENT has confirmed that there are no cases of Monkeypox reported in Zimbabwe as yet following fears of the disease spilling into the country after a case was recorded in South Africa last week, Express Mail Zim can report. Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa told journalists at a post cabinet meeting briefing Tuesday that the country has however put surveillance, laboratory testing and case management measures in place in preparation for any potential outbreak.
“There is no case of Monkeypox recorded in the country but we have surveillance,labaratory testing and case management measures in place,” she said.
Monkeypox is a viral disease that causes flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. It is endemic in parts of Africa.
The World Health Organization will decide this week whether to declare monkeypox a global health emergency.
That has stirred criticism from some leading African scientists who say it has been a crisis for some African countries for years. Meanwhile, normalcy has prevailed in the local healthy delivery system after nurses and doctors resumed duty after a week long strike.
The return was on ‘compassionate grounds’ but coincided with an upward review of salaries of civil servants.
