Mnangagwa spoils judges with pricey luxurious vehicles
A law expert submitted that this seemingly noble gesture might compromise the justice delivery system and give rise to selective application of the law
HARARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa has spoiled newly appointed judges and splashed millions of United State Dollars on the purchase of luxury vehicles Monday,Express Mail Zim can report.
The new sleek Range Rovers were paraded at the High Court.
Varying with the model and trim level, a quick Google search lists the price of a Land Rover Discovery hovering around $248,820 and going to $443,436 for the latest year the model was manufactured.
Therefore translating to millions of dollars basing on the fact that President Mnangagwa recently appointed 11 new judges of the High Court and Administrative Court.
Eighty-two lawyers applied for the vacant positions, and 39 were shortlisted for interviews by the Judicial Service Commission.
In a notice, President Mnangagwa stated that he had appointed former magistrates Faith Mushure and Ngoni Nduna and lawyers Regis Demure, controversial Philipa Phillips, Gibson Mandaza, Joel Mambara, Naison Chivhayo, Vvian Ndlovu, Sijabuliso Siziba and Mpokiseng Dube as judges of the High Court.
Maxwell Kaitano fills the sole vacancy at the Administrative Court.
Judges get new cars every four years and eventually buy them at a song considering depreciation and book value.
Recently, at least 400 000 US Dollars loans were extended to judges and State University vice chancellors.
“This gesture compromises the judicial system and gives room to selective application of the law.
“The judges cease to be independent,” said a South Africa based law expert who preferred anonymity.
Recently,businessman Tendai Mashamanda of Maswhede Holdings wrote to the Judicial Services Commission lamenting of the misconduct and alleged massive corruption bedevilling the justice delivery system after he lost his Highlands House.
