Harare – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday handed over 90 double cab Isuzu vehicles to Chiefs and vowed to promote improvement in the welfare of the traditional leaders.

Mnangagwa who was with his vice presidents, Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi when he handed over the vehicles said his administration’s grand plan is to give traditional Chiefs vehicles every five years.

“My government will continue to improve the condition of service of traditional Chiefs,” Mnangagwa said in his speech when he handed the vehicles at Harare International Conference Centre in the capital.

He said the Chiefs will use the vehicles to “effectively and efficiently” deliver their services to communities in their jurisdictions.

Mnangagwa said Chiefs must continue to uphold cultural values.

“As you go back to your respective jurisdictions, I urge you
to continue carrying out your role in preserving our cultural
values and norms, even in the midst of their defilement on
social media,” Mnangagwa said to the traditional leaders.

Mnangagwa said Chiefs will also receive medical assistance and funeral assistance packages.

Apart from the other perks, Chiefs will have good roads constructed to their homesteads, have electricity and water installed at their homes with government helping with tillage services on the traditional leaders fields.

The 82-year old leader said traditional Chiefs now have many roles that include registering births and deaths.

He said Chiefs also act as marriage officers in the rural areas.

Mnanagwa did not attend this year’s United Nation’s General Assembly where he send Foreign Affairs Minister, Fredrick Shava to represent him.

The vehicle hand-over ceremony was attended by Chiefs, their families and senior government officials.
