The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has issued a Class II recall for a batch of Yaz Plus contraceptives due to a quality issue. The affected batch, WEW961J, manufactured by Bayer (Pty) Ltd in South Africa, contains incorrect packaging, with some packs having 24 light orange hormone-free tablets and 4 pink hormone tablets. Instead the correct configuration should be of 24 pink hormone tablets and 4 light orange hormone-free tablets.
Non-compliance with product quality specifications may result in loss of efficacy and potential harm to users.
MCAZ advises all licensed wholesalers, pharmacies, public and private clinics, hospitals and and units affected to cooperate with the distributors of the product in Zimbabwe during the recall process.
This recall is a precautionary measure to protect the public from potential harm.
MCAZ advises users to check the batch number on their tablet packs and, if affected, to immediately stop using the tablets, return them to their pharmacist, and consult their healthcare professional.
The MCAZ is responsible for ensuring that medicines and medical devices in Zimbabwe are safe, effective, and of good quality. As the National Pharmacovigilance Centre, MCAZ monitors the safety of medical products and allied substances in Zimbabwe.
