Mbudzi Interchange: Govt to compensate 135 affected property owners

Harare- GOVERNMENT will compensate 135 affected property owners who face displacement due to the US$88 million state- of-the- art Mbudzi Interchange which is under construction.
Transport ministry permanent secretary Kudzanayi Chinyanga told journalists during a tour Thursday that funds will be disbursed to affected property owners within the vicinity of the construction site. “The affected property owners from around here will be compensated by government. The contractor (Tefoma) is not liable to compensate the affected property owners,” said Chinyanga.
The site tour organised by Zimbabwe National Road Authority (Zinara)in conjunction with Zimbabwe National Editors Forum (Zinef) , shows that the project is taking shape with project manager stating a two weeks projection to advance five of of the 14 bridge structures.
Chinyanga however refused to divulge the amount set aside citing confidentiality matters on contracts entered between government and property owners.
“We have roped in at least three valuators , one is Public Works department representing government and two independent valuators,” explained Chinyanga.
However , several families occupying illegal structures around the site are likely not to be compensated and the same fate will befall traders near the roundabout. The major casualty is a Zanu PF aspiring member of parliament Ernest Mudzengerere who rents out the bulk of the ‘tuckshops’ mostly serving Glen Norah and Harare South residents. Other major structures likely to be affected include 8 Miles Service Station , Mayor Logistics Truck Shop and Extra Mile leisure centre.
The traffic interchange is expected to ease congestion at arguably the country’s busiest traffic roundabout ,as the Second Republic continues to implement infrastructure projects.
Of the 14 major bridge structures to be built, 12 of them are on the main interchange and two on access roads detours.
