Mbare Musika Fire Disaster: Water Shortages Intensify Challenges for Firefighters
Harare-Witnesses have described the recent fire at Mbare Musika as one of the worst in the area’s history. The blaze broke out on Tuesday night and quickly engulfed makeshift shacks and market stalls made from flammable materials like steel, wood, and plastic.
In the midst of the chaos, residents hurried to save their belongings, carrying bags and pushing carts, while others offered help to those in distress. The scene was filled with cries for help and the sound of crackling debris as the fire turned homes into ashes, displacing families and leaving many without shelter.
Local resident Taurai Nendoro reported that the fire started around 9 PM, though the cause remains unknown. “I’ve lived in Mbare for 30 years and have never seen anything like this,” he said, noting that power outages and candle use may have contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
Another resident, Vimbai Dandara, expressed her grief over the loss of her home and livelihood, saying, “It’s a disaster. We’ve lost everything, and I have no idea where we’ll go tonight.”
Witness Charles Gomo highlighted the psychological impact on those affected, stating, “This is shocking,” as he reflected on the extensive damage and loss of livelihoods.
The Harare City Council’s fire brigade responded swiftly, but their efforts were hampered by water shortages and the crowded conditions of the area. Stanley Gama, the council spokesperson, mentioned, “The fire brigade is doing all it can, but water shortages and crowd control issues are slowing progress.”
An investigation into the fire’s cause will be conducted once it is fully extinguished. Authorities are working to stabilize the situation and provide assistance to the affected residents.
