Masvingo Explores Geo Pomona’s Waste Management System for Citywide Improvement

Masvingo City Council has reached out to the government and Geo Pomona Waste Management for assistance in developing a modern waste management system for the city.

This initiative follows a recent visit by a delegation of councillors and city officials to Geo Pomona’s waste management facilities, where they explored advanced waste disposal techniques.

Masvingo City Council’s Acting Director of Health Services, Mrs Sithabile Matava, outlined the city’s growing waste management challenges and the urgent need for modern solutions.

“We are currently disposing of waste at a dumpsite, but due to increasing environmental concerns, we are working towards establishing an engineered landfill,” she said.

“The transition has already started, and our visit to Pomona was aimed at understanding their landfill management strategies and overall waste management operations.”

Mrs Matava expressed optimism that the insights gained from the visit would help improve waste management in Masvingo.

“Our experience at Pomona has given us valuable knowledge on how to efficiently manage a landfill,” she added.

“We will now evaluate the best practices we learnt and apply them to address Masvingo’s waste challenges. We also look forward to further collaboration with Geo Pomona to enhance our efforts.”

Providing an update on ongoing developments at the Geo Pomona site, CEO and Executive Chairperson Dr Delish Nguwaya highlighted key progress.

“The sorting plant has been hot-commissioned by Turkish engineers,” he said.

“There is still significant work to be done, and we are planning to employ 150 workers to operate the sorting plant.”

Dr Nguwaya also revealed that Geo Pomona is shifting its focus to the construction of a waste-to-energy plant, scheduled to begin in June.

“Our next phase involves preparing for the waste-to-energy project, which will start in June,” he confirmed.

Masvingo City Council is optimistic that the lessons learnt from the Pomona visit will help shape an improved waste management framework, ultimately addressing the city’s growing environmental concerns.
