Learners dumped as 5000 teachers attend Teachers for ED union launch

Harare- At least 5 000 teachers drawn from across all provinces are set to throng Harare International Conference Centre Wednesday on the launch of Teachers for Economic Development union (TeachersforED).

The secretary for primary and secondary education Tumisani Thabela granted authority Tuesday to release 5 000 teachers and some selected Harare schools were cherry picked as accommodation bases.

It is not clear if government will pay for this service and the very use of schools for political purposes is a complete negation of the law.

Three provinces are providing 700 teachers , while Harare alone has 1000 delegates and the discrepancy is glaring – meaning Harare learners are most affected.

The sycophantic disposition possessed by several sectors has triggered mobilisation of praise singing formations running with the “ED” mantra.

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Association of Zimbabwe president Obert Masaraure condemned the development.

“We condemn the abuse of teachers, learners and school property in pursuit of private partisan political gains. We are angered by the selfish tendencies of the ruling party officials, they are prepared to destroy social services in pursuit of power preservation only.

“We note with concern how ZANU PF mascots have invaded our schools and are pretending to be teachers.

“We are further worried with the politicisation of the civil service.

“Civil Servants are expected to be non partisan at law but are now being deliberately turned to serve partisan interests.

“Parents should consider lawsuits against officials who are abusing property purchased by SDCs, ” he said.
