Kwaito music legend Mapaputsi dies, aged 48

Mapaputsi was a trailblazer in the kwaito genre, joining the ranks of pioneering artists such as Zola 7, TKZee, and Chiskop.

Johannesburg – KWAITO music legend Sandile “Mapaputsi” Ngwenya has died.

He was aged 48.

The artist, famed for his iconic hit Izinja, reportedly died in hospital on Thursday night, 5 September.

The news was confirmed by the Ngwenya family, who issued a statement that reads:

“The family of Sandile Ngwenya, popularly known as Mapaputsi, is deeply saddened to announce his passing. He died in the late hours of September 5th following a short illness.”

The family said they appreciate the outpouring of love and condolences during this difficult time.

“We request privacy as we grieve and make arrangements for his funeral. Details regarding the funeral and memorial service will be provided in due course.”

Mapaputsi was a trailblazer in the kwaito genre, joining the ranks of pioneering artists such as Zola 7, TKZee, and Chiskop.

His 2001 album Izinja became a cultural anthem, earning him two Metro FM Awards in 2002 for Best Kwaito Artist and Best Kwaito Song.

While his former manager, Busisiwe Kunene couldn’t confirm nor deny the news. She assured fans that an official statement and media briefing would be held soon.

“We’ll release a statement and have a media briefing,” Busisiwe told Daily Sun.
