Grand Take-over: Strive Masiyiwa set to buy Supersport
Pretoria- TELECOMS mogul and Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa is on the verge of clinching a deal to take over top flight South African football club SuperSport, Express Mail News has heard.
Masiyiwa is reportedly the top contender with former Wits executive also interested in the deal.
However sources privy to the deal said Masiyiwa is tipped to sign on the dotted lines for the historic take over.
” Well, Mr Masiyiwa is likely to take over and shrug off competition from the Wits guys who are also interested.
“It is no secret that he has the financial capacity to rescue the club and reclaim it’s lost glory that is being caused by a dip in the club’s coffers,” said a former Warriors defender who is now resident in South Africa after hanging up the boots in the SA top flight league. According to renowned publication iDiski Times, the deal is subject to approval from the Premier Soccer League executive committee.
They further report that SuperSport has for long been mooting the idea after facing some financial constraints.
The club has a decorated track record which saw them winning three consecutive league titles between 2007 and 2010.
Efforts to get a comment from the Pretoria based club chief executive Stan Matthews hit a snag as the mobile number provided to us could not go through at the time of writing Tuesday .
If Masiyiwa clinches the deal,it will not be the virgin moment for the PSL side to have a blissful dance with a Zimbabwean achiever.
Retired Warriors international Kaitano Tembo has served twenty- three years at the club starting off as a player and rising to head coach before his departure this year. Meanwhile,Masiyiwa is not a stranger in sports investiments .
He founded Kwese TV to break DSTV Supersport Monopoly with view of creating a channel for African sport and won rights to flight live football matches in 2017.
Locally one of Econet’s product lines Buddie sponsored the top flight league but Masiyiwa was reportedly incensed by the ‘behind closed doors politics’ and conflict of interest when the Mobile Network Operator (MNO)’ s rival Netone was given a nod to sponsor certain teams in a deliberate move to frustrate him.
