Government lobbies for digital economy

Harare- MINISTER of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Jenfan Muswere has urged content creators to create the right content to sell ‘Brand Zimbabwe ‘.

He said his ministry has been extending infrastructure across the country through the development of community information centres to enable access to the Internet in all corners of the country.

Muswere told content creators at a workshop in Kadoma Thursday that the government is willing to complement content that builds the country and evade negativity.

“The New Dispensation has brought a stakeholders approach and let us report positively for the benefit of our country. We need to rethink about image building so that we can contribute to the development of our country and ensure a digital economy, ” said Muswere.

The minister also said there was also a need for content creators to monetise and commercialise their content so that the content created can generate money.

Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) director-general Gift Machengete said he was also a content creator himself and categorically stated that Potraz acknowledges the existence of quasi content creators who are bent on demonising the country’s image.

He singled out Hopewell Chin’ono and Mai TT and said his institution has no control over their views based on democracy principles and their opinions are entitled to themselves.

He emphasised that he preferred content that builds the economy across all sectors.

“We want content that builds our economy, creates employment and contributes to the digital economy. We also want to know Government’s expectations on local content, cyber and data protection.

“We ought to replace Google servers with local servers and create a sector specific for local content in various fields,” Machengete said.

Lately, the global economy relies on digital media and Zimbabwe is no exception.
