Freeman,Macheso light up Castle Tankard
By Lloyd Rabaya
Before Freeman HKD performed, Master H warmed the stage with his thunderous voice blending well with his electrifying performance. The young lad brought the roof down dishing hits such as the anthemic Habakkuk, Zvirimo mumoyo, Mujolo, and his verse on the Gore song remix among others.
As soon as Freeman HKD hit the stage singing his yesteryear hit, Vakomana veDrip, the audience where whipped into a state of hysteria.
The Dancehall Doctor prescribed a healthy dose of harmony, serenading the frenzied crowd one song after another at the Castle Tankard held in Harare over the weekend.
The HKD Boss delivered a flawless performance backed by the infallible HKD Band and soothing angelic vocals led by the queen, Daruler.
In the hour slotted for him after the energetic Master H, Freeman poured his soul into every note and left it on the stage to the delight of the imbibers who cheered in awe.
He performed hits such as Handina godo, Patichaita mari and Rangarira featuring Daruler off Top Striker album and the irresistibly catchy Man to man from last year’s Trophy album which he featured the Guni brothers, Nox and Tyfah.
In a seamless transition, Daruler also performed two of her tracks Goodbye Taks and Popcaan’s Silence cover in the midst of Freeman’s performance with pulsating energy leaving the revelers with no choice but to sway to the rhythm.
For years, fans have lauded the combination of Freeman and Daruler on recording songs and on live performances. Daruler left a mark on Freeman’s Varidzi vezvinhu album and since then the synergy they have is truly a match made in music heaven.
Before leaving the stage, Freeman invited the Sungura maestro Alick Macheso to perform their hit song Ngaibake. The coherence of two generations.
As the last notes of Ngaibake echoed, the sun’s rays faded as Freeman left the stage leaving the audience in the hands of the legendary Macheso and the Orchestra Mberikwazvo band.
Macheso wowed fans with his magical fretting and strumming of the bass strings, and once using a towel, accompanied by his signature dances. His workmanship with the dancers led by the pardoned Majuice left fans wanting more.
Macheso also took from the archives among other hits like Charakupa, Mundikumbuke, Shedia leaving fans enthralled.
The 64th edition of the festival was running under the theme Ride the Legacy.
