Family Riots: A Zimbabwean tale takes center stage
Harare-ALMASI Collaborative Arts, under the leadership of Danai Gurira, is set to premiere “Family Riots,” a gripping play by Gideon Jeph Wabvuta, from November 15 to 24, 2024, at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
This production delves into the heart of Zimbabwean family life, specifically the tumultuous late 1990s in Mbare. The play follows Sidney and Primrose, a young couple whose dreams are shattered by financial hardships and hidden truths. Their story serves as a poignant reflection of Zimbabwe’s societal changes, evoking nostalgia and introspection in audiences who lived through that era.
Directed by the talented duo of Lucie Tiberghien and Makomborero Theresa Muchemwa, “Family Riots” offers a powerful exploration of personal and societal conflicts. Gideon Jeph Wabvuta, a product of Almasi’s Walter Mparutsa Fellowship and a USC graduate, is a rising star in the world of theater.
