E-passports proccesing suspended after the only machine suffers major breakdown.
Harare- THE proccesing of electronic passports has been halted indefinetly after the country’s ONLY machine suffered a major breakdown ,Express Mail Zim has learnt .
This came to light Saturday when an official from the Registrar General’s office turned away passport seekers and made the revelations.
“Mushini wakaita breakdown , ndiwo wega wenyika yese, kwete minor asi major breakdown (The only machine broke down and it serves the whole nation,it’s the only one),” said the official in an audio in our possession .
The official further said government will make official communication but such had not been done at the time of writing and Home Affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe was not available for comment.
The development is a major blow to passport seekers as the E-Passport system had eased congestion and reduced corruption at the passport office .
Inside sources however told Express Mail Zim that there is possibility of sabotage from disgruntled employees from the companies contracted to carry out renovations at the e-passport centre.
“There is a company called Kingdom Five Zimbabwe that was given a contract on this project and they neglected paying salaries and employees threatened to jam the machines,” said our source.
