This distinguished honor recognizes her significant contributions to civil society and her steadfast dedication to empowering marginalized communities.
Born in the rural Chivi District of Masvingo Province, Zimbabwe, Dr. Mupambi, affectionately called “The Rural Girl,” grew up in a family of eight that depended on peasant farming for survival. Despite the hardships of her upbringing—marked by long walks to school and scarce resources—she excelled academically, completing her early education at Chikore Primary and Chiwanza Secondary Schools.
After completing her O-levels, Dr. Mupambi moved to Bulawayo and began her career at TM Supermarkets. By 19, she had become actively involved with the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), advocating for workers’ rights. Her bold stance on labor issues led to repeated dismissals, but her determination earned her a junior management position by the age of 21.
In 2009, she joined Zimbabwe’s Civil Service under the Ministry of Public Works, but her passion for labor rights propelled her to establish the Progress Coordinating Trust in 2011. This non-governmental organization focuses on social and economic empowerment. Leaving the civil service to dedicate herself fully to activism, she took on the challenges and risks associated with her work.
Dr. Mupambi gained national prominence through her involvement in the #ThisConstitution movement, which championed the protection of Zimbabwe’s constitution. Despite facing threats, detentions, and a politically charged environment, she remained a steadfast advocate for justice.
In 2018, she founded the Civic Society and Churches Joint Forum (CSCJF), further cementing her role as a leader in advocacy and community service. Her work has positioned her as a respected political analyst and thought leader, especially in disability rights and inclusive policy development.
Dr. Mupambi’s passion for continuous learning has seen her earn qualifications in Business Management, Media and Journalism, Politics, and Public Management. The Honorary Doctorate is a fitting acknowledgment of her unwavering commitment to personal growth and mentorship for emerging activists.
Today, as a proud mother of three, Dr. Abigale Mupambi remains an inspiring figure, proving that neither geographical location nor background defines one’s destiny. Her life journey is a shining example of how resilience and determination can overcome adversity to achieve remarkable success.
In her own words, “To God Be the Glory” perfectly captures her life’s work—a testament to faith, strength, and an enduring commitment to empowering communities. Dr. Mupambi continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration, motivating others to pursue change and make a difference.
