The Vice President Dr Constantino Guvheya Chiwenga has rallied the construction industry players in SADC to be united.

He was the guest of honour at the Zimbabwe Building Contractors’ Association regional summit in Victoria Falls on Thursday.

The two day event was running under the theme ‘Leveraging Investment in Infrastructure as a catalsyst for Economic Growth’.

The vice-president acknowledged the importance of the construction industry in SADC and how synergies can help spur it.

“It is with no doubt that the construction industry plays a critical role in the realisation of the SADC construction,infrastructure and economic development aspirations.
“As Zimbabwe,we are alive that strong bonds in construction are built by the mantra, ‘brick upon brick’,and such synergies should define and strengthen the region’s unison particularly within the construction industry,”said VP Chiwenga.

He also called for the construction industry players to embrace technology.

“The world is witnessing unprecedented growth in technological innovation and it is imperative that we,as the SADC region and Zimbabwe as a country should pull ourselves to the requisite level of competitiveness.
“Business as usual is no longer an option but we must diversify and upgrade our strategies to harness the power of technology,”he added.

The construction industry should consider disability-friendly buildings,vice president Dr Chiwenga said.

“ I want to challenge building designers and regulators to religiously prioritize accessibility and rights of persons with disabilities during the design of buildings in observance of the United Nations Conventions on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The architecture of buildings should incorporate ramps, elevators, accessible restrooms and adaptable living spaces and not to add them on after construction is completed,”he urged.
The vice president hailed the Zimbabwe Construction Association for its remarkable work in infrastructure development in the country.
“l want to applaud the Zimbabwe Construction Association for its great resilience and tireless effort which has seen the Country recording significant progress in construction and infrastructure development.
“Chief to note is the upgrade of the Harare-Beitbridge highway, revamp of the Beitbridge Border Post, Robert Mugabe International Airport and The Victoria Falls Airport, massive dam construction and, the impressive on-going Mbudzi Interchange project mention but a few. I want to applaud both the government and private constructors for a job well done,”.
The event also witnessed the awarding of awards,Manah Construction took the top gong as the Contractor of the Year.
