Chitungwiza elects Mayor

Chitungwiza municipality has finally elected Lovemore Maiko as its substantive mayor.

The election done Friday comes after a long time which was affecting necessary full council meetings for the authority’s development.

The local authority was thrown into chaos by MDC Alliance recalls at Mwonzora’s behest, incensed by councillors who opted to side with his nemesis, Nelson Chamisa of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

Ward 7 councillor and then mayor, Maiko was recalled in May 2022, two months after six others had to reclaim their posts during the March 26 by-elections.

Some Councilors who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the council was now being run like a one man band by the deputy Mayor Kiven Mutimbanyoka

“Mutimbanyoka had turned this council into a ‘Kireni Zulu band’, a one man band. He was making all the decisions alone but we hope Mayor Maiko will steer the ship well,” one said.

Prior to the elections, Mutimbanyoka is said to have walked out of a meeting after one of the Councilors moved a motion to elect a mayor.

“Mutimbanyoka walked out of the meeting after one of the Councilors moved a motion to elect a substantive Mayor, when he walked out of the meeting he called Permanent Secretary Tafadzwa Muguti to stop the meeting,”

However, he forced the adjournment of the meeting which was said to be against the Urban Councils Act.

“He tried tried to adjourn the meeting which is against the urban council act , when he walked out we just followed the law and we elected an acting chair and moved the council business forward,” he added
