CCC Fails to Field Candidates Ahead April By-Elections
For the upcoming by-elections set for April 6, 2024, the opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) party has decided not to field candidates in two wards.
Due to its failure to submit candidates for the by-elections, a group within the CCC led by Sengezo Tshabangu indirectly enabled ZANU PF to win seats in the legislature and local government that had been initially won by the opposition party in the August 2023 elections.
The recall of current members of parliament and council by Tshabangu, who claims to be the CCC’s acting secretary general, is what sparked these by-elections.
On Wednesday, February 28, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) declared the candidates shortlisted for the April 6 by-elections. The panel declared:
“This notice is in compliance with section 125(4) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13], stating that the candidates indicated in the schedule below were duly nominated for election as councillors in their respective wards at the conclusion of the nomination court session on Friday, February 23, 2024. Thus, in order to elect council members for the aforementioned wards, polls will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2024, from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
The candidates nominated for the 13th Ward of the Kusile Rural District Council are Donald Chewareerwa (ZANU-PF), Henry Moyo (UZA), and Celani Ndimande (Independent).
In the meantime, Christina Sigauke (ZANU PF), Tinei Siziba (Independent), and Rangarirai Sibanda (Independent) have been nominated for the Redcliff Municipality’s Ward 3 seat.
