Cabinet to decide on the fate of CALA
Harare:THE Continuous Assessment of Learning Activities is expected to come under Cabinet consideration next week where a decision on whether to review the programme or drop it completely will be made.
According to Minister of Primary and Secondary Education,Torerai Moyo, the review exercise began in May of 2023.
“I am holding here this voluminous book containing results of a curriculum review exercise that has been going on since May.
We now have the final product and what remains is to take the results to Cabinet on February 6,2024″said Moyo at a press conference held at the close of last year.
During a Question and Answer held at the National Assembly, Moyo again addressed some of the issues surrounding CALA,the financial burden on parents:
“The money being spent by parents to fulfil the CALA requirements is much more than the school fees being paid. Parents are not happy with the way teachers are conducting CALA. What can be done to alleviate the situation?”said Moyo
This was in response to a question posed by Midlands Proportional Representative Cde Vairet Nhari on what Government was doing to address the high costs to parents and guardians for their children to complete CALA.
The debate around the CALA system has been raging on from the onset with most parents calling for its complete scrapping, however some school of thoughts argue that the CALA system is a right step in aligning our education system to morden trends .
