U.S Ambassador dedicates Carter Room at their Embassy in Harare

Harare: U.S. Ambassador Pamela Tremont joined by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Amon Murwira dedicated the U.S. Embassy’s largest conference space to the late U.S. President Jimmy Carter on Thursday, January 16, at its chancery in Westgate, Harare. The event attended by officials of the Government of Zimbabwe, partners of The Carter Center, civil society, and Embassy staff celebrated the legacy of President Carter in Zimbabwe.

Ambassador Tremont said, “His commitment to Zimbabwe’s future was not just a political decision but a deeply personal conviction that all people should have an opportunity to contribute to the future of their nation.” She continued, “It is fitting that this room, used to bring people together, bears the name of a leader who believed in the power of diplomacy and peacemaking.”
The Honorable Minister Murwira said, “Former President Jimmy Carter’s commitment to human rights and justice was instrumental during Zimbabwe’s journey to independence…. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to Zimbabwe’s independence – those who fought bravely for freedom and those who supported them from afar, including the late President Carter.”

The event concluded with a video message from former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Andrew Young, who was Carter’s lead negotiator in support of Zimbabwe’s independence. Now age 92, Ambassador Young shared a message about his meetings with independent Zimbabwe’s first leaders. He concluded by saying, “We’re very proud of our relationship to Zimbabwe. Thank you very much for remembering my boss, Jimmy Carter.”

President Carter was the first U.S. President to visit Sub-Saharan Africa and the only U.S. President to visit Zimbabwe post-presidency. His global commitment to health, human rights, and democratic governance continued for a half century until his death December 29, 2024, at age 100.
