It’s no joke- Malawi appoints top comedian Michael Usi as vice-president

The professional funny guy replaces the late Chilima who died in a plane crash early this month

Lilongwe- Ain’t that funny!

Malawi on Friday sworn in top comedian-turned-politician Micheal Usi as vice-president at a ceremony held in parliament in the capital, Lilongwe.

The 55-year-old professional funny guy  replaces Saulos Chilima, who died in a plane crash earlier this month, along with eight other people.

Uso has a decorated track record in comedy where he has featured in several sitcoms.

Some analysts hailed the move arguing that his satire creates a hypothetical solution to the harsh realities of life which is healthy to a nutritious democracy.

“He is a politician who has gained a reputation for his humorous speeches and public appearances. While he may not be a professional comedian like the likes of Trevor Noah or our own Doc Vikela, he has shown a ability to connect with his audience and use humor to make points and diffuse tension,” said a local political analyst who preferred anonymity.

His appointment was with received with mixed feelings on social media with some sectors of Malawian society saying it was a ‘big joke’.

“If we are serious as a country why do we appointment jokers in the presidium,” wrote one Emmanuel Chansa on X (formerly Twitter).
“We have become a funny nation,” wrote another Malawian national on Facebook and made emphasis with more than 10 laughter emojis.

The late VP perished along with former first lady Mama Muluzi- wife to Bakili.
