How to tame transport woes

Improving public transport in Zimbabwe requires a comprehensive approach, considering the current challenges. Here’s a step-by-step plan for the government to enhance public transport:

1. *Assess and audit*: Evaluate existing infrastructure, vehicles, and services to identify areas for improvement.

2. *Develop a transport master plan*: Create a long-term vision with clear objectives, incorporating international standards.

3. *Invest in infrastructure*: Upgrade roads, bus terminals, and transportation hubs, prioritizing safety and accessibility.

4. *Modernize fleets*: Introduce new, safe, and accessible vehicles, including buses and trains, considering eco-friendly options.

5. *Optimize routes and schedules*: Streamline services for efficiency, reliability, and coverage.

6. *Public-private partnerships*: Collaborate with private operators to leverage resources and expertise.

7. *Digitalization and technology*: Implement digital payment systems, GPS tracking, and smart traffic management.

8. *Safety and security*: Enhance measures to ensure passenger safety, including CCTV cameras and adequate lighting.

9. *Training and capacity building*: Develop skills for transport staff and management.
