Winky D’s Ghettocracy lives to its top billing
Gaffa proves he is among the best in the game
Harare- ZIMBABWEANi reggae-dancehall artist Winky D (born Wallace Chirumiko) put on a typical moving performance at his 31 December 2023 Ghettocracy show in Harare Monday night.
With his thought-provoking music narratives and lyrics resonating with Ghetto youth, the most popular Zimdancehall gaffer drew a massive crowd into the Harare International Conference Centre, marking a remarkable end to the year 2023 and stylish entry into 2024.
Aptly titled “2 Decades of Excellence,” the event and several musicians who performed there as well as multitudes of fans celebrated Winky D’s illustrious career in the music industry, making him one of Zimbabwe’s greatest artists.
Winky D’s distinctive fusion of traditional Zimbabwean music with reggae and dancehall beats is what makes his music stands out and popular.
His thought-provoking lyrics often contain political commentary, touching on social problems including injustice, poverty, and corruption.
Winky D’s song “ibotso”, which basically talks about corruption, mismanagement and abuse of public resources by a greedy elite few, has rattled the authorities and made him a marked man.
Zimbabwean police on 4 March 2023 stormed a stage and shut down his show to intimidate him .
Winky D made a bold statement to the packed HICC , he said :
“Mumwe oti ndakahwinha, umwe oti wakabvuta;
Vari kuona Mbuya Nehanda vari muguta;
Ndakatsikisa dambarefu Eureka Eureka;
PaRadio voramba voti iro ridza wega;
Ndakati vanotora zvevapfupi nekureba;
Umwe woiramba hanzi iyo wakaimba wega”
“I could not get a TV advert. I could not get a radio interview for this show. I only had the internet and the streets. Ada kundimisa, misa. Ada kundirwisa, rwisa.”
