Legendary former Chevrons all round cricker Heath Hilton Streak is no more.According to reports,Streak succumbed to a prolonged cancer struggle on Tuesday,22 August,however there has been no official statement from his family yet.
Cricketers Ravichandran Ashwin, Henry Olonga and Sean Williams took to social media platform X to express their grief and pass on condolences.
“Heath Streak is no more. Sad!! Really sad,” wrote Ashwin.
“Sad news coming through that Heath Streak has crossed to the other side. RIP @ZimCricketv legend. The greatest all-rounder we produced. It was a pleasure playing with you. See you on the other side when my bowling spell comes to an end,” said Olonga.
“Streaky. No words can explain what you and your family have done for mine and many others Our hearts our broken you leave behind a beautiful family and a legacy for us to live up to! You will b missed we love you dearly Rest in peace Streaky,” wrote Sean
Nicknamed Streaky or Stack ,Heath was born on March 16, 1974, in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Streaky was a right-arm fast bowler and a right-handed batsman. He represented the Chevrons from 1993 to 2005.
During his cricketing career, Streak achieved several notable milestones. Statistically Zimbabwe’s leading wicket-taker in Test and One-Day Internationals (ODIs)with 216 wickets in 65 matches
Streak also had success in ODIs, taking 237 wickets in 189 matches.
After retiring as a player, Streak ventured into coaching.He was the Chevrons team bowling coach between 2009 and 2013,also had a stint with the Bulawayo-based franchise Matabeleland Tuskers in the 2012-13 season, and in May 2014 Streak was appointed bowling coach of the Bangladesh Cricket side on a two-year contract. In 2016 he was hired as the Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Cricket team before his dismissal in 2018.
Outside of Cricket ,Heath also showed his love for other sporting discpline,having opened a sports club in his hometown of Bulawayo that was named after himself. The club was reportedly equipped with several sporting disciplines such as swimming, hockey, five-a-side soccer and a state of the art gymnasium.
However, in April 2021, Streak faced a ban from all cricketing activities for eight years after being found guilty of breaching the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Code.
Despite the controversy surrounding Streak’s dimissal his contributions to Zimbabwean cricket cannot be denied. He remains one of the country’s most successful cricketers..Ndoda emadodeni,lala ngoxolo
