Ecocash apologises for ‘guerilla marketing’ of their USD wallet product’
Harare- MOBILE money transfer Ecocash has Thursday apologised for its ‘guerilla marketing’ wherein they advised customers that their Ecocash United States Dollar wallet had been credited with greenbacks, Express Mail Zim can report.
This caused ‘alarm and despondency’ as recipients of this message were shocked with this ‘miracle money’ only to find their accounts empty and stormed Econet offices for clarity.
“We apologise for the message sent to you in error on 25 Oct 2022 about your USD balance.
“We however notify you that your EcoCash USD wallet is active on *153#,” in a statement tantamount to guerilla marketing by the leading service provider.
Last month, a local technology publication conducted a survey to determine the level and form of usage of the EcoCash USD wallet and it was established that it was 18 percent of first time Ecocash users who adopted the Ecocash USD wallet.
Their ‘fake’ message with they claim to have erroneously transmitted and apologised 48 hours later had infact served its purpose to lure and increase the uptake of the product’s users.
The product faces stiff competition due to the influx of USD cash remittances platforms.
