Mnangagwa speaks of need for new national strategy to combat veld fires

Harare: PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has pointed out that a new national strategy to minimise the rise in veld fires was urgently needed, Express Mail Zim can report.

He made the remarks Tuesday in his condolence message to the families of 10 farm workers who perished in a veld fire in Esigodini .

“A new national strategy is now needed to minimize this growing menace whose risk continue growing by the day until we receive our first rains for the summer season.
“Both the Ministry in charge of our Environment and our Civil Protection department have to urgently get together so a comprehensive response to veld fires is developed across all provinces,” he said.

He urged citizens to desist from starting uncontrolled fires, especially in this period where our velds are “tinder dry and highly combustible.”

He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s families and wished a speedy recovery to those nursing burns.

He ordered State assisted funerals to the affected families.

“I have since instructed government to move in with assistance to the affected families, including meeting funeral expenses.
“May the souls of the dear departed rest in eternal peace,” he said.

Mnangagwa had earlier dispatched some senior government officials into visit the affected families .

One member of the delegation, Deputy Environment minister Barbra Rwodzi, described the departed as “heroes” who died trying to save the environment.
