How Mine employee dies during underground operations

Bulawayo- AN employee at How Mine, located 30 kilometres south-east of Bulawayo has died after sustaining injuries during underground mining operations Monday.

The deceased identified as Liam James,was employed as an air loader and he was pronounced dead at the mine’s Wellness Center .

In a statement released Tuesday, the mine’s management extended condolences and said this was an isolated incident in a long time. “This is an extremely tragic incident for the How Mine community, which has operated for over four million man its hours without a fatality.

” Management extends deepest condolences to the bereaved, and has immediately mobilised all necessary support to the deceased’s family and colleagues.
All relevant authorities have been notified,” read part of the statement.

The management said detailed investigations into the incident have already been instituted in partnership with the Mines Inspectorate and independent investigators, including the equipment supplier.

Lately, fatalities in the mining industry were prevalent in areas where artisanal miners operate due to non adherence to Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) regulations.

How Mine has been in operation since 1942 and has produced over 1.1 million ounces of gold to date.

It comprises a single underground operation, where ore is processed at a central processing facility, using a combination of conventional milling and a carbon-in-leach process.
