Harare- INCARCARATED businessman Moses Mpofu has been sucked into yet another scandal of close to half a million dollars looted by his company Synlac Pvt Ltd, Express Mail Zim can report.
This follows a clampdown by the the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) who implicated him in the Mbare Biogas Project scandal where him and his co-directors including his wife Nobunkosi and brother Vusumuzi at Synlac Pvt Ltd received US$415 000 which was supposed to power up Mbare with clean energy.
Nobunkosi and Vusumuzi were arrested this week and appeared in court Friday.
Harare regional magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa granted the businessman’s wife and his brother were granted US$800 each.
Mpofu’s bail was, however, opposed by the State.
The Mbare Bio-Gas project was funded by a European Union grant and was meant to light up Mbare with a 100KVA biogas generator but Synlac directors pocketed money and converted it into personal use.
ZACC spokesperson Simiso Mlevu said Synlac secured the contract through misrepresentation.
“Synlak lied about being authorised resellers of Camda New Energy Technology Co. Ltd — a key tender requirement,” said Mlevu.
According to ZACC, Synlak, with help from corrupt City of Harare bosses namely former Director of Works Phillip Pfukwa and ex-Chamber Secretary Josephine Ncube manipulated payments and got the money before doing the work. The accused allegedly siphoned the funds from Synlak’s CABS and BancABC accounts through a series of shady cash withdrawals.
“These payments were made before project completion and that’s how the funds vanished,” stated Mlevu.
The former Harare city bosses implicated are also in custody and Harare’s Acting Town Clerk a Mabhena Moyo uncovered the scandal.
