ZCC launches ecumenical drive to curb risky youth migration in Chipinge
In response to this urgent crisis, ZCC has developed a comprehensive, multi-layered intervention designed to address migration from the ground up. By focusing on awareness, empowerment, and support systems, the programme seeks to provide safer, more hopeful futures for Zimbabwe’s youth within their own communities

On April 11, 2025, the Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) took a bold step in addressing the growing crisis of irregular migration by launching the Accelerated Ecumenical Interventions for the Reduction of Risky Flight in Chipinge District.
This milestone initiative, made possible through the generous support of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg, aims to tackle the root causes of unsafe migration and provide sustainable alternatives for young people in key migration-prone areas, including Chipinge and Chimanimani—regions heavily affected by migration to South Africa, Botswana, and Mozambique.
The launch event brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, local authorities, church leaders, development partners, and members of the community—all united in their commitment to safeguarding the dignity and future of Zimbabwe’s youth. Notable attendees included the District Social Development Officer, Mr. Gumbo, and the District Youth Officer, Mr. Richard Gore.
Speaking on behalf of the District Development Coordinator, Mr. Gore described the programme as a “call to action—a commitment to justice and the reduction of illegal outward migration,” which he noted is a deeply entrenched phenomenon influenced by historical events dating back to colonial times.
The interventions will be rolled out in collaboration with community radio stations, social workers, legal practitioners, medical professionals, and other key players, who will provide crucial support services to returnees re-entering the district.
Chipinge has seen a significant rise in irregular migration, particularly among young people driven by economic hardship, social instability, and climate-related disasters. While many embark on legal migration journeys in search of better opportunities, they often fall prey to exploitation, abuse, or even fatal outcomes.
In response to this urgent crisis, ZCC has developed a comprehensive, multi-layered intervention designed to address migration from the ground up. By focusing on awareness, empowerment, and support systems, the programme seeks to provide safer, more hopeful futures for Zimbabwe’s youth within their own communities.
